4 Simple Steps To Discover Your Mission
Living Out Your Mission Is A Life-Long Journey
Discovering your mission is a journey and it can change depending on what season of life you’re currently in and in the near future.
In my opinion, one of the most dreaded questions that can be asked is…. What do you want to be when you grow up? Or what do you want to declare as a major? Or what university do you want to go to and why? How many times do you think you have been asked those dreadful questions? I can probably say it is in the hundreds.
From the moment your short high school career begins, the world looks to you for answers and questions about what you are studying and what you want to be when you grow up.
But, what about the now, in the present? I rarely hear people talk about how they are making an impact now, in the present. Most of the time talk revolves around the past or the future.
So, I ask you this: What are you doing right now to make an impact and to spread God’s love?
It may be speaking to your neighbor about their day. Or making a coffee run for someone, or calling up a friend or family member that needs someone to talk too. Taking a small step on a daily basis to help someone else will go a long way and will only assist with the journey to discover your mission.
Everyone is different and unique in their own way. The good news is, God created you with a purpose and a mission.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Discovering Your Mission Can Take Time.
Discovering your mission can take a few moments or possibly up to many years.
I believe with my whole heart that it’s best to begin the journey one small step at time, not try to jump from point A to point Z. But to take your time and enjoy the present moment learning all you can, praying and getting into God’s word each baby step of the way.
How do the bible verses make you feel? Do you get the feel of hope, safety and security? God has big plans for your life, and he gives us a choice to follow him and his plans or not.
There have been many times in my life when I was not following God’s plan for my life, instead I was relying on my own selfish mission and plans to get me from point A to point Z as fast as I could.
However, through many seasons of selfish actions, God opened my eyes to his plan when I gave up on my own strength and started to rely on His strength. That made all the difference.
Step By Step Guide
I have composed a short & simple step-by-step guide to discover your mission according to God’s plan for your life. I am going to share with you below the ways that I simply started to discover my mission, in hopes that maybe it can help you begin to discover yours.
Step 1: Learn about your passions.
Ask yourself these questions:
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
What activity do you enjoy for fun?
Who or what brings you the most joy?
Some of these questions can help guide you to learning about your passions that will hopefully begin to guide you toward your mission.
During the time of learning and discovery, keep your eyes on the Lord at all times and keep the Lord front and center. Allowing him access to be involved and show you (in His own unique way) which path to take.
One way to keep God at the center is through prayer. I truly believe that prayer is powerful, keep constantly praying about your mission and God is going to use you to give Him the glory.
(We will possibly do a future blog post or podcast episode dedicated to prayer…)
Finding Clues From The Past.
Growing up in the 90’s, the pictures that my parents took of me, I was always outside digging in the dirt or climbing a tree. Usually, in the pictures you could not make out what color clothes I had on because I had dirt all over me (LOL).
I loved being outside and enjoying the outdoors and all its beauty. It’s funny, because I still love it just as much.
Several months after graduating from college, I began to work for the largest lawn and garden company in the United States and loved it.
I was around fertilizer, dirt and plants when I go to work. How cool is that? It’s all right down my alley. I also enjoyed helping the customers with the concerns and questions they had with their yards or gardens.
Several years later, I expanded my career and started up my own business…. Can any of you guess what it was? A landscaping business!
Yes, you probably guessed it right. I absolutely loved it. The feeling of being outdoors, assisting others with their own space and lending a helping hand when they could not do it themselves. I loved helping people bring life to their own piece of the Earth.
Learning My Passion: Throughout most of my life, I have had a passion for the great outdoors and God has guided me down that path for many years now. He has helped me discover a path, right in line with my passions! I absolutely love what I do for my full-time job and my gig as well. It is all connected and I know that God made that connection and I am living out my mission.
When Lianna and I started dating, we loved serving others. We would serve at our church multiple times a week.
We had a calling to start up The Simple Mission to help others discover their mission according to God’s plan. We discovered our passions as a couple and went for it.
Step 2: Find a mentor who can offer wisdom and guidance.
Ask yourself these questions:
Is there someone who you look up to for advice?
Do you often find yourself asking people for help or guidance?
Mentors are super important in discovering your mission. A wise mentor will challenge you and stretch your mind for ideas and thoughts that you could not have imagined before. They are offering to give you the wisdom throughout their years; successes, failures, etc. Listen and learn from their wisdom.
In my past, I have honestly listened and heeded guidance from mentors and there have been times when I did not listen at all. Looking back on some of the events and seasons in my past, I wish that I listened.
Mentors have a special place in my heart. They can be family elders, a father or a mother, a sibling, close friend or a coworker or a person sitting next to you in church. All these examples are mentors who have impacted my life.
Finding a mentor will only help guide you throughout the journey of discovering your mission according to God’s plan.
Step 3: The third step is to write down your thoughts and prayers.
Ask (& write down) these questions:
What do you dream of?
What are your aspirations?
What are your fears?
When we write down our thoughts and prayers we take them from our mind and heart and place them on a piece of paper where we can look, think and pray about it outside our own mind.
Our minds have a crazy way of doing things and sometimes it feels like our mind takes control and we feel like we lose control. When we write those thoughts down, we place the control in God’s hands and in our own hands.
For me, 80% of the time when I write something down, it actually happens. Not by magic or by myself. Let me explain. When I do not write my thoughts or ideas down and it stays in my head, I probably will act on it only about 10-15% of the time.
Prayers can be done in the same fashion, write them down along with your dreams and blend them together Your prayers and dreams may start to sound a little different and look differently, because you are inviting God into the mix for Him to show you the way.
The Simple Mission was started because of these simple actions above, and the Lord has helped us through it and it has been such a blessing and it will continue to be a blessing and a challenge in the many years to come.
Step 4: Discover your first step you need to take.
Do your homework. Pray, pray, pray and more prayers. Research and learn what you want to do and ask God what he wants you to do. Half the time, you already know what that first step is, you just need to trust God, get His “Go-Ahead”, and do it.
Figure out the first step toward your dream through prayer. Taking the first step can be very frightening and scary and it is honestly one of the most difficult steps to do however it will be well worth it!
